The Transformative Power of Recognition: 3 Simple Steps to Support Your Team
November 2, 2023

Countless articles, blog posts, and podcast episodes delve into the strategies, tips, and hacks that leaders must implement if they want a healthy and productive workplace culture. But one of the most essential factors in driving employee engagement and developing a positive workplace environment is actually quite simple: recognition. Recognizing and acknowledging employees for their contributions and efforts can have a profound impact on their motivation, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. Regular reminders that you value and appreciate your team's efforts enhance self-worth, confidence, and self-efficacy, while improving social, emotional, and mental well-being. In fact, a 2023 survey found that employee engagement increased by 34% and productivity increased by 24% when teams were recognized weekly. The benefits are transformative.

And while many leaders understand that recognition is important, so many are seemingly resistant to making the effort to recognize their people because of a host of reasons: the work, the optics, the time involved. But the risks of failing to reach your team in this way are too significant to overlook: not feeling valued or valuable can lead to self-doubt, stress, anxiety, and isolation, which can have negative and sometimes detrimental effects on health, well-being, and overall performance.

The good news: ensuring your team isn't guessing at whether they're valued doesn't need to be complicated or time-consuming. And it's 100% in your control as a leader through three simple steps: acknowledgment, admiration, and appreciation.

Acknowledgement
Acknowledging your team is as straightforward as it sounds - make eye contact when you walk into the office, smile, and say hello. The simple act of making eye contact with your people when you interact with them can make a world of difference. Eye contact is a fundamental form of non-verbal communication that conveys respect and interest in what the other person is saying or doing. When leaders and colleagues consistently make eye contact with their peers, it sends a clear message that they're seen and valued. This simple yet impactful gesture can foster a sense of belonging and respect within the workplace, promoting open and authentic communication and making employees feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and ideas.

Admiration
Recognition doesn't have to be limited to formal awards or ceremonies; it can be a daily practice. Showing admiration for something your colleagues have done or said - or even something they're wearing! - can have a significant impact on their morale. Let your team know you're invested in them beyond simply their capacity for work. Whether it's admiring an idea they suggested at your last team meeting or complimenting their outfit, these small acts of positive reinforcement create a culture of appreciation and positivity where employees are encouraged to support and uplift one another, which is crucial for a healthy workplace culture.

Appreciation
Appreciation is a fundamental aspect of recognition that cannot be underestimated. And it does require effort beyond simple eye contact or compliments - it means that you need to be specific and concise about the effect that your employee's work or presence has had on you, the team or, the organization overall. Demonstrating gratitude for something your employees have done, whether it's a small task or a major project, is a powerful way to strengthen your bond with your team. A few words go a long way: “I appreciate that you consistently show up on time, because it gives me confidence that we have the time to review the many obstacles on this particular project.” When employees feel that their contributions are valued, they're more likely to remain engaged and committed to their work, and they're more likely to show the same for their colleagues.

The impact of recognition on employee engagement and workplace culture cannot be overstated - it's a simple yet powerful tool that can transform the dynamics of a workplace. By following these three steps - acknowledging, admiring, and appreciating - leaders can create a positive and motivating environment where employees are more engaged, satisfied, and committed. Ultimately, a culture of recognition that fosters a sense of belonging and respect, leading to increased productivity and performance, is within your control. All it takes is the simple act of getting started.

Take a moment to think about who you can acknowledge, admire or appreciate before the end of the day today. Don't overthink it. Just do it!
